Guy Dean joins Organic Ocean as new President and General Manager
Two years ago, Organic Ocean was approached by the Steveston Harbour Authority which, in conjunction with Fisheries and Oceans Canada, was coordinating a CAD$14 million rehabilitation of the commercial fishing waterfront. It was felt that Organic Ocean would be an ideal fit because of our transformative work in improving the viability of our fisheries through supply chain disruption particularly directed at leveraging our fisheries’ adoption of sustainable and quality handling practices with the objective of optimizing the value of the resource.
Working with First Nations fisheries partners, we developed a plan for converting an 80 year old heritage cannery building into a modern fish processing, cold storage and handling facility. Within 12 months, we had built out approximately 12,000 sf of space into what will soon be a federally registered seafood processing facility enabling Organic Ocean to do end-to-end processing and export its products anywhere in the world.
In addition to the processing facility, we built a modern lunchroom and office and created a state-of-the-art freezer and cooler that has allowed us to bring all of our cold storage in house. This has eliminated reliance upon outside cold storage service providers, which will provide great increases in energy efficiency. As it stands, we believe the new “Paramount” facility will enable us to scale our business roughly five-fold.
Realizing we needed to build out our team to capitalize on the expansion potential, the next step in this process involved identifying someone who could lead, who brought seafood industry experience, and who shared our ethos – a tall order, right? Organic Ocean would like to welcome Guy Dean to the team.
The wonderful fit for me was that everyone in the organization shared the same passion about sustainability as I do – it’s like preaching to the converted.
Guy served Canada’s Albion Farms and Fisheries for 13 years, starting as the vice president of the company’s import and export division before taking over as its chief sustainability officer two years into his tenure. As of 30 April, Dean has stepped down from his role with Albion to take on the role of president and general manager at Organic Ocean.
